New Book by Gaelic Medium Pupils
Leabhar nan Gaidheal Oga The Book of the Young Gaels is a book project currently underway in schools throughout the Highlands of Scotland. Pupils in schools in the ie Highland Council area have been busy designing new artwork to complement the new writing during the summer term. A video has been created of young pupils reading the new work along with English translation, therefore Non-Gaelic speaking pupils can also be involved. The Highland Council hope to involve pupils from all areas within the highlands in this project.
This project is a joint initiative between Gaelic Books Council and The Highland Council. The writers include Catriona Lexy Campbell, Iain Finlay Macleod, Morag Stewart, Angus Peter Campbell, Rody Gorman and Lisa Storey. They are currently involved in delivering creative workshops in 24 primary and high schools attended by gaelic medium pupils.
The coordinator Johan Byrne, a former Fort William Gaelic Medium school teacher has said that she believes the quality of work undertaken in the first phase is terrific. She also says that she is looking forward to seeing the pupils work produced professionally by a publisher.
The artwork and writing will be published in a book with the aim of launching at the National Mod in Fort William alongside an exhibition.
A spokesman from the Highland Council has said “We are very pleased to be working in partnership with The Highland Council on this very interesting and innovative project. We are really looking forward to seeing the publication develop over the next few months and launching Leabhar nan Gàidheal Òga book in the late Autumn.”
